A Forever Home Where Architecture Meets Daily Life

Set atop a gentle wooded hill, this home was conceived for daily life and long-term enjoyment. A forever home for a couple, the Mohr Residence strikes a balance between architectural ambition and practical constraints. While the clients initially sought an all-concrete house, dl-Design Studio developed a hybrid approach—combining concrete with conventional construction—to preserve the design intent while meeting the project budget.

dl-Design Studio grounded the design in an early parti concept known as the Four-square House. The home is organized into four equal quadrants, with the southwest portion removed to form a patio and garden and relocated as the garage. The remaining quadrants are defined by cast-in-place shear walls that serve as both structure and a clear public-private delineation. The house takes advantage of natural drainage, solar-oriented glazing, and its relationship to the landscape views. Custom enclosure detailing unites concrete walls with structural insulated panels and traditional framing, enabling faster construction and cost efficiency. Developed through close collaboration and regular design meetings, the home reflects a clear architectural idea carried thoughtfully from concept through completion.
