A Wooded Refuge Reframed by Sunset Views
A future retirement getaway, the Mountain Cabin Retreat embraces a quiet relationship with the land on a wooded property in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The home is sited on a hill at the edge of the woodline, following an east–west axis with the primary suite positioned at the western end to capture daily sunset views. Inspired by North Carolina’s simple tobacco barn vernacular, the design reinterprets familiar forms through a modern lens while responding carefully to the site’s natural contours.
dl-Design Studio developed a linear plan that balanced concept, structure, and client vision. Structural insulated panel construction was central to the design, shaping both the walls and roof while enabling efficiency and durability. Although the project concluded at the schematic design phase due to budget constraints, bi-monthly meetings and coordination with the client and their SIP vendor ensured a clear plan that reflected the intended retreat experience.
